I am taking part of this satellite bit of programming relevant to the EXPERIMENTAL GEOGRAPHY exhibit entitled BODY DOUBLE EXPLORERS CLUB as a guest speaker…um, well speaking while someone in another city relays what I’m saying in person to a captive audience in an interview context. Cool! This Saturday!
- “Join us Saturday night at the Waffle Shop when six fascinating people from around the world will take our stage for a not-to-be-missed edition of the talk show. The only catch is you, the audience, have to sit in for guests or their voices won’t be heard. Audience members will act as local physical avatars for global guests from countries including Iran, Finland, and India. As our host asks questions, participants in the shop will wear headphones and repeat the virtual guests verbatim.THE BODY DOUBLE EXPLORERS CLUB is an open league whose members explore the world through the bodies of others. THE BODY DOUBLE EXPLORERS CLUB is being presented in conjunction with the exhibition Experimental Geography, Guest curated by Nato Thompson at the Miller Gallery.
From the exhibition notes for EXPERIMENTAL GEOGRAPHY, guest curated by Nato Thompson at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University (my bud Astria Suparak is the Director there):
- “The manifestations of “experimental geography” (a term coined by geographer Trevor Paglen in 2002) run the gamut of contemporary art practice today: sewn cloth cities that spill out of suitcases, bus tours through water treatment centers, performers climbing up the sides of buildings, and sound art of the breaths exhaled in running Boston’s evacuation route. In the hands of contemporary artists, the study of humanity’s engagement with the earth’s surface becomes a riddle best solved in experimental fashion.”

Oohh, you should come to this! The One Take Super 8 Event that Double Negative Collective is hosting! The filmmakers involved are quite an awesome bunch. I made a film for it and am a bit nervous/excited to show it! The photo below is from the shoot…more soon!

- The One Take Super 8 Event (OTS8) began in 2000, with 20 filmmakers each shooting a single reel of Super 8 film, which then premiered to an audience without the filmmakers seeing their work beforehand. All the films were shown as shot. No cuts. No splices. The popularity of this non-competitive festival has allowed it to return each year with more filmmakers participating. To date over 600 films have been created for the One Take Super 8 Event!

Double Negative Collective will be screening recent work at Club Saw in Ottawa on November 5th, 2009 at 730pm. The screening is presented by Cafe Ex and programmed by Scott Birdwise.
- “Café Ex @ Club SAW is pleased to present a selection of films from Montreal-based filmmaking collective, Double Negative. In an age of big business financed, industry-based, capital-oriented film production, Double Negative Collective represents an innovative and much-needed alternative. Where the Industry model dominates discourse and puts a premium on instant recognition, the generation of capital, and the consolidation of power, the twelve filmmakers that comprise Double Negative participate in a democratic discussion on film/video form, aesthetics, and politics – in brief, the past, present, and (possible) future(s) of cinema. The fourteen works chosen for this exhibition represent the challenge posed by Double Negative to much of the current stagnation of film in the 21st Century. (Scott Birdwise, Programmer) “

- “Interested in bulletin boards because they are:
- Kind of like collage, kind of like film editing, they’re scrapbooks, they’re photoalbums, they’re often rigid squares or rectangles intended to organize or contain a bit of chaos or swirling ideas, they keep different ideas and images easily accessible and locatable kind of like an internet web browser window as opposed to a bound magazine or book. They are also portraits of the people who use them, in a way.
